The Girl and I are going on a trip to Ottawa for Canad’Eh. It’s an escape from the madness that is Québec’s July 1st Moving Day, as well as an opportunity to meet the others’ friends and classmates. This trip itself worked out to be a bit of a coincidence; I had been planning to visit The Son since January and she was supposed to celebrate the first with her cooking pals. Given that she’s in charge of driving us there, it’s only fitting that I’m in charge of keeping us fueled.

I figured this would be as good a time as any to start my entry for ReciPenpals, since I’d be in a bit of a time crunch until the 14th. How would I make an elaborate veggie tart fit into my life?

Sometimes you want to go out and drink with friends on a terrasse… until you realize that summer sun gives way to Pleutréal… and all you want to do is curl into a ball around a grilled cheese sandwich. Yesterday was one of those times.
Up to this point, the Girl and I had been getting closer and closer to collaborating on a dish. We had re-met at a picnic. Got closer at one of my brunches. We had played sous chef for one another and shared a few jarnics. But this was the next step, sharing a kitchen.
Seemed like it worked out.
I have never heard of a chess pie before… but I think I need to make it to help topple the cupcake empire.
