Blackberry Porter Klondike Float

Back in the day I saw a post regarding Klondike floats. Acquire a Klondike bar. Cut it into ice cube sized blocks. Throw into a glass and top with coke. While this all seems relatively normal, there are two characteristics that differentiate them from the A&W staple. The cubes froth faster with the increased surface area and all of the random chocolate shards provide an unexpected crunch.

And yes, it’s in a wine glass. Mom has yet to empty the hutch of beer sleeves.

I’d been badgering the Fish, the Teddy Bear, the Photographer and the Roomie incessantly that we needed to try this, but with beer. Coke floats are fun as a kid but dark beer floats are much more interesting as an adult. The Fish’s Summer Solstice party seemed like the perfect event given that the afterparty theme was beer. This time I had the Cannery Brewing’s Blackberry Porter in hand.

Suuuper frothy, super fun.  Initial reviews of the porter said that the Blackberry notes were strictly scent, with no actual flavour. While this may be true when drank straight up, the ice cream’s fat coats the tongue and enhances the berry aroma. Full of body and rich, the beer becomes all the more decadent. The combination of chocolate and blackberries is reminiscent of a black cherry coke float. Just like a kid, I munched on the ice cream before it had a chance to finish foaming.
